What is coaching?
In sports, a coach helps to motivate the team, leads practices to build skills that will help them to be successful on the court or field, capitalizes on strengths, and fosters growth in areas needing improvement. Academic or ADHD coaching for your child serves a similar purpose, but applies that philosophy to academics, executive functioning, motivation, life transitions and adjustments, social skills, organizational struggles, and ADHD symptoms. Coaching is a highly individualized experience, meaning that the format, strategies, and relationship with the coach will look completely different depending on the youth's needs and goals.
How does it work?
A coach will schedule an introductory phone call or Zoom with you and/or your child to discuss what issues or needs have lead to seeking a coach. You will have an opportunity to ask questions, share your story, and determine if coaching feels like a good fit. If it does, we can begin to schedule regular sessions and start the coaching process. Sessions take place weekly (alternative scheduling options are available - see RATES) in your home, on the college campus, or in a location of your choice*. The focus of each session varies from person to person and from week to week depending on current needs and goals. You may spend one week creating a detailed schedule and comprehensive plan for completing school assignments on time, another identifying a plan for organizing your desk/work area to support increased productivity, and another organizing and editing an essay for English class. Another important component of coaching involves contact between sessions via phone, text, or email to check-in, provide continuous support, and ensure follow-through on tasks.

How is coaching different from therapy? From tutoring?
In general, therapy is a "past-focused" process, challenging individuals to explore and process the basis and reasons for their behavior. Coaching is a "future-focused" process, empowering and motivating youth to gain new skills and set goals for themselves. While there is a distinct difference between the two, coaches do offer emotional and therapeutic support to youth by virtue of developing a caring, supportive relationship.
Tutoring is generally a strictly academic process, aimed at helping your child to improve or increase knowledge in specific subject areas. While there is absolutely a component of academic support to coaching, it is focused around improving organization, motivation, writing, and study skills. Please note we do not offer support for specific areas of study.
